The Eco Industrial Park (EIP) of Chamusca

Developed on the basis of Industrial Symbiosis (IS) Networks (the first in Portugal) – in which a waste resource of one company is taken as a raw resource by other different companies – it implies an increased coordination and collaboration effort from its stakeholders (the rural community of Chamusca, university, industries and local/central government) in sharing knowledge and expertise, especially for the infrastructure and network management.
The EIP at Chamusca uses the paradigm of Industrial Ecology as a driver, one which pushes for closed loops in resource use, mimicking biological ecosystems, thus increasing efficiency. Its potential as an innovation engine is transversal: whether in terms of waste and resources management (in services, tools and products), which will be developed and applied in-site, but also in developing and testing new IS facilitating tools, bringing new developments that can be replicated, and shared, in other EIP projects, and also within the Living Lab network.
The EIP is targeted on local industrial community, namely on the SME’s, supporting them for the Knowledge and Innovation Society, strongly in line with the Renewed Lisbon Strategy, the i2010 Policies, and the cohesion and competitiveness priorities of EU.
